Depois de nove meses em coma, o piloto de F-1 Jules Bianchi morreu. Bianchi se envolveu num acidente estúpido no GP do Japão de 2014. Acidentes acontecem — por isso são chamados de “acidentes”. Os Grandes Prêmios de F1 são, por definição, campos de prova onde quase sempre se aprende com o erro. No entanto, o acidente que vitimou Bianchi foi estúpido porque mostrou explicitamente que a Fórmula 1 parece ter abandonado, sem qualquer motivo, os fundamentos do esporte automotor. Estava chovendo em Suzuka. Havia um carro fora da pista numa determinada curva. O carro estava sendo retirado por um trator-guindaste. As condições da pista encharcada obrigavam o diretor de prova a impor a bandeira amarela acenada (não estática) para forçar a redução drástica da velocidade dos carros pelo menos duas curvas antes daquela onde se encontrava o reboque. Com a bandeira amarela, estática ou acenada, é proibido ultrapassar — portanto, a ordem é tirar o pé do acelerador drasticamente. Aprendi isso quando fiz, obrigatoriamente, escola de pilotagem para começar a correr nos Estados Unidos pela SCCA, organização que cuida do GP dos EUA de F1. O abandono dos fundamentos do esporte a motor é algo estúpido que não pode ocorrer, sob pena de termos outros pilotos como Jules Bianchi morrendo inutilmente. Uma coisa é morrer na pista por causa de uma situação inusitada, não-prevista. Outra coisa é morrer por burrice e desatenção de todos os envolvidos.

After nine months in a coma, F1 driver Jules Bianchi has died. Bianchi was involved in a stupid accident in the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix. Accidents happen — that is why they are called “accidents”. The Formula 1 GPs are, by definition, test fields where almost always one learns from his/her mistakes. However, the accident that killed Bianchi was stupid because it explicitly revealed that, fo no reason whatsoever, Formula 1 seems to have abandoned the bascis of motorsport. It was raining. At a certain turn, there was another car outside the track in Suzuka. That car was being removed by a tractor-crane. The very wet track conditions required the director to impose the waving (not static) yellow flag in order to force the severe speed reduction at least two turns before the one where the tractor-crane was removing the disabled car. When a yellow flag (static or waving) is displayed on the race track, no passing is allowed — therefore, the driver must reduce the speed severely. I learned that lesson when I was required to attend a race driver’s school to start my racing activities in the United States. The SCCA, which handles the U.S. Grand Prix, was the organizer of that race driver’s school. That requirement was not complied with during the race in Suzuka — so much so that Bianchi, too, lost control of his car and let the track, hitting the tractor-crane with extreme violence. Abandoning the basics of motorsport, for whatever reason, is not a wise thing to do and must not happen. Otherwise, we will witness the useless, stupid deaths or other drivers like Jules Bianchi. It is one think to die on the track because of a completely unforeseen situation. It is another one entirely different to die because of everyone’s stupidity and lack of attention.
